First part section of the TAP in Greece.

Project Description
The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), is a 870 km long pipeline which transports natural gas from the Caspian region to Europe. At the Turkish-Greece border the TAP is connected to the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) and runs through Greece via Albania to the south of Italy. TAP will begin to provide Europe with natural gas from Azerbaijan in 2020.
LCS Cable Cranes GmbH’s (LCS) scope of work on the TAP project was to provide its services for a 580 m long section of a steep slope near Thessaloniki, Greece. LCS used a material ropeway with a payload of 12 metric tons to transport 48” pipes with a length of 18 meters over steep terrain. The pipe was placed into position and laid in the trench for welding. Finally, the trench was filled again with the help of the cable crane system. The material ropeway system was also used to transport construction material and equipment.
Two key challenges were the short delivery time (crucial for the customer), and the technical aspects of the construction site requiring a payload of 12 metric tons combined with a lifting height of up to 100 m.
Leveraging years of experience and expertise, LCS developed its scope and technical specifications and put in place a cable crane system that met the technical requirements in the desired timeframe.
The cable crane system was operated with a GANTNER GW350D, a diesel-powered winch with 350 HP and a maximum line pull at full drum of 110 kN. The winch is operated in circular drive. By means of a GANTNER carriage GC200, with a payload of up to 20 metric tons the 48” pipes were transported. The carriage could be adapted to the required lifting height.
The high-quality design and construction of the machines enabled work to be completed in 2017, during the hot, dry and dusty summer climate in Greece.
LCS’s attention to quality, detail and technical expertise came together to fully satisfy customer expectations.
Scope of Work
The scope of work included planning and design, installation, operation and dismantling of the cable crane system.
